This young Fer-de-lance (Bothrops asper) is one of the many reasons to watch your step while in the tropics.

  • Morning coffee with a friend. A very young Central American Coral Snake (<i>Micrurus nigrocinctus "mosquitensis"</i>). These snakes possess a very potent neurotoxin that is used to quickly immobilize their prey, which consists primarily of other snakes, with a side dish of caecilians, eels, and other elongated animals.
  • This Banded Snail-eating Snake (<i>Sibon annulatus</i>) has evolved enlarged vertebral scales to aid in arboreal movement. What's even more amazing is the evolution of specialized teeth on the lower jaw that are used for extracting its snail prey from the shell. How specialized! The tropics never seem to amaze me.

  • A sight to see indeed! A four foot Costa Rican black milk snake (<i>Lampropeltis triangulum gaigeae</i>) climbing into the canopy. These are heavy bodied and round snakes, not the kind of build you'd expect to see scaling a bare trunk, but hey, it's the rainforest. The bark of the tree was fissured and flaky; it kept breaking off under the snake's weight.
