  • Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus)
  • Striped Crayfish Snake (<i>Regina alleni</i>) is one of the smelliest snakes I have come across!
  • It's easy to see where this Dusty Hognose Snake (<i>Heterodon gloydi</i>) gets its name. This group of snakes use their exceptionally upturned rostral scale to excavate their favorite food item- toads. While searching for these snakes in their sandy habitat, we located several burrows that bore the tell-tale shape of the snake's distinctive head shape. Finding these burrows kept the excitement lingering in the frosty morning air until the first of the three individuals were found.
  • Eastern Coral Snake (Micrurus fulvius fulvius)
  • Eastern Kingsnake (<i>Lampropeltis getula</i>)
Seminole County, Georgia

  • Western Rat Snake (<i>Pantherophis obsoletus obsoletus</i>) with an intense red coloration gleaming though from between the slick liquid black of its scales. This good sized adult was found in a sand-prairie in southwestern Missouri.
  • Midwestern Worm Snake (<i>Carphophis amoenus helenae</i>) from the Heron Pond area in southern Illinois
  • It was hard to believe that this beautiful blue/black snake was the same subspecies as the racers that I commonly encounter in Florida. Not only did this snake display what I felt was a very different coloration, but it was a monster in both length and girth in comparison to what I'm used to seeing down south. I guess they do grow 'em bigger in the Midwest.
  • As with the previous photo, this adult Southern Black Racer (<i>Coluber constrictor constrictor</I>), from the Heron Pond area in southern Illinois, was a giant! There may not be Indigo snakes (<i>Drymarchon</i>) in Illinois, but who needs them when the racers are this big!

This old snake showed many tail-telling battle scars that are so often associated with a long and clearly successful life.
  • Mangrove Salt Marsh Snake (<i>Nerodia clarkii compressicauda</i>)
Orange phase adult, as seen while kayaking
  • Eastern mud snake (<i>Farancia abacura</i>)
  • Burmese python (<i>Python molurus bivittatus</i>)
