It's easy to see where this Dusty Hognose Snake (Heterodon gloydi) gets its name. This group of snakes use their exceptionally upturned rostral scale to excavate their favorite food item- toads. While searching for these snakes in their sandy habitat, we located several burrows that bore the tell-tale shape of the snake's distinctive head shape. Finding these burrows kept the excitement lingering in the frosty morning air until the first of the three individuals were found.

P.S. I'd recognize this snake anywhere ;). I love this macro shot. It really shows the facial anatomy of the snake with it's crazy nose and such. Very cool.
